[T]here is a horde of priests among whom chastity is rare.” Philip of Burgundy, the Catholic bishop of Utrecht, admitted that chastity was nearly impossible among clerics and monks who were “pampered with high living and tempted by indolence.” This problem festered until the reform-minded Council of Trent convened in 1545.

They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some" (2 Tim. 2:17,18). Is Protestant and Church Of England the same? As Weber discussed, the evidence for grace became a particular and peculiar kind of works, not the performance of works in the church, but the success of work in the world. This free will is present and obvious in Scripture before the fall of Adam and thereafter.

Protestantism, in all essential elements, merely borrows wholesale from Catholic Tradition, or distorts the same. The religious believer can make himself sure of his state of grace either in that he feels himself to be the vessel of the Holy Spirit or the tool of the divine will. Furthermore, it is not burdened with such later Roman Catholic developments as the Papacy, purgatory, indulgences, the immaculate conception of Mary, and her assumption into heaven.

Then by golly you deserve that pay, even though it didn't seem like work!") 4. Calvin taught some were chosen to life; some were chosen to damnation (1 p. 61). "All are not created on equal terms, but some are preordained to eternal life, others to eternal damnation; and accordingly as each has been created for one or others of these ends, we say that he has been predestinated to life or to death" (11 p. 101). John Calvin was born in France to a upper middle class Roman Catholic family in 1509.

Amidst much fasting and self-flagellation he claimed to have many visions of God and of Mary, the Roman Catholic goddess. Although Zwinglianism does hold uncanny resemblance to Lutheranism (it even had its own equivalent of the Ninety-five Theses, called the 67 Conclusions), historians have been unable to prove that Zwingli had any contact with Luther's publications before 1520, and Zwingli himself maintained that he had prevented himself from reading them.

Although such a charge normally offers general instructions and adomitions, it may also be a formal and specific command from Anglican superiors to their clerical subjects. If all one can is “accept and embrace the grace…” then it is not free. “Effectual calling is the work of God’s almighty power and grace, whereby (out of his free and special love to his elect, and from nothing in them moving him thereunto) he doth, in his accepted time, invite and draw them to Jesus Christ, by his word and Spirit; savingly enlightening their minds, renewing and powerfully determining their wills, so as they (although in themselves dead in sin) are hereby made willing and able freely to answer his call, and to accept and embrace the grace offered and conveyed therein.” There could be no stronger statement indicating irresistible grace.

Dutch Calvinist settlers were also the first successful European colonizers of South Africa, beginning in the 17th century, who became known as Boers or Afrikaners. There was also a lot of persecution in general against Protestants. Tawney in Religion and the Rise of Capitalism (1926) noted that Weber treated multi-faceted Reformed Christianity as though it were equivalent to late-era English Puritanism, the period from which Weber’s most telling quotes were drawn.

Those who adopted the "Protestant work ethic" tended to succeed a bit more than others in this new economy. (Well, "succeed" economically, at least.) But it was the "work ethic" that got rewarded; the theological underpinnings in themselves didn't contribute much. None of these movements was completely separated from the others, and even the distinction from the non-ascetic Churches of the Reformation is never perfectly clear. Even the amiable Baxter counsels deep distrust of even one’s closest friend, and Bailey directly exhorts to trust no one and to say nothing compromising to anyone.

Congregationalist: Many Congregational churches claim their descent from the original Congregational Church, a family of Protestant denominations formed on a theory of union published by the theologian Robert Browne in 1592 and arising from the Nonconformist (Reformed) religious movement in England during the Puritan reformation. There are detailed formulas for the dedication of a bell, a burial ground, a church building, a dwelling, a parish house, a school, and altar, sacred vessels, an organ, the pulpit, and, in fact, any material object that has a relation to things spiritual.
