A self-sustaining change in behavior requires a resetting of the person’s internal state—her or her beliefs, preferences, goals, and so on—in a way that preserves the person’s sense of freedom and control. Core affect consists of all possible combinations of pleasure-displeasure and activation-deactivation and therefore includes states that would not be called emotions, such as calm, fatigue, or drowsiness.
